Extended Definition-of Character (11th Grade)

S.S.
Extended Definition                            English 11

Character

Character is personality a distinguishing quality of

nature, it is the way a person reacts to different

situations, and it can be the compound of mental and moral

traits marking a person etc…. The opposite of it would be
person without these qualities that make up character.

Character goes way back to the beginning of mankind.

It is not something you are born with, rather something
you grow into. Such as, one builds character when one
learns to work at an early age. That makes one
responsible, and diligent, two distinctive traits that
create one’s nature.

According to the Bible in the New Testament, Jesus is

portrayed as a man who committed no sin whatsoever. Even

after being treated so unjustly he maintained a perfect

character. He built it by humbling himself to his

disciples, keeping his peace while being afflicted, and

giving his life for all humanity of our past, present and

future. This is the perfect example of the highest level

one can reach if only one could. An example of bad

character in the Bible is in the Old Testament in the book

of 1 Samuel 25;it tells us of a man, Nabal who was so

mean, rude, and greedy, examples of very bad character

traits.

Abraham Lincoln mentioned, “Character is like a tree

and reputation is like its shadow. The shadow is what we

think of it; the tree is the real thing.” What he meant

was, there are so many branches that build up to be one

word put together, character. It is the way a person
reacts to different situations. Like the expression people
often use, “Go with the flow.” An example of it could be
one who gets along with society and is adaptable to the
changes and stages of life.

Many people often wonder, ‘how may I obtain

character?’ How does one get it? Well, you can’t buy it.

Helen Keller left us these specific words, “Character

Cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through

experience of trial and suffering can  the soul be

strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.”

One has to build it on his own through hardships. Eleanor

Roosevelt herself said, “People grow through experience if

they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how

character is built.”

In other words character is constructed into a person

by the discipline and the environment which one grows up

in. One must be very careful because everyday, one is

influencing the character that is being formed of everyone

they interact with.
